2 teens indicted in separate Birmingham homicides
Two teens have been indicted on capital murder charges in separate Birmingham homicides.
A Jefferson County grand jury on April 5 issued the indictments against A’Marion De’avion Yancey, 19, and Antonio Deuntra Pendelton Jr., also 19. The indictments were made public Monday.
Yancey is charged in the Dec. 18, 2022, shooting death of 18-year-old Reginal Emanuel Duke Jr.
The indictment states Duke was killed when Yancey was stealing a Nissan Altima from Duke.
Just before 10 a.m. that Sunday, police received a 911 call of a person shot in the 400 block of Fourth Street in Thomas.
West Precinct officers arrived at the location and found Duke suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:56 a.m.
Yancey surrendered to police two days later. He has been held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail since is Dec. 22, 2022, arrest.
Pendleton was initially charged with murder in the May 18, 2023, shooting death of 26-year-old Antoine Deonta Ester. The victim’s newborn baby was inside the apartment when Ester was killed, and the grand jury updated the charges against him to capital murder because he was killed in the presence of his child.
West Precinct officers were dispatched to Forest Hills Village on Tempest Drive about 2:25 p.m. that Thursday on a report of a person shot.
When they entered the residence, they found Ester unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced Ester dead on the scene.
Authorities said there was a group of people gathered inside the apartment – probably less than 10 people – when an argument between the victim and the suspect erupted.
The suspect, he said, then fired shots at the victim.
Neighbors said the apartment belonged to Ester’s sister.
Pendleton has been held without bond since is May 30, 2023, arrest.
Trial dates have not yet been set in either case.
