2 teens hit by train in Helena, critically injured
Two teens were critically injured Monday afternoon when they were struck by a train while walking on a railroad trestle in Helena.
Authorities said police and firefighters were called about 2:45 p.m. to the Riverwoods subdivision on a report of juveniles struck by a CSX train.
Mayor Brian Puckett, one of the first to arrive on the scene, said two teen girls and two teen boys – believed to be 15 years old- were walking along the trestle when two of them were hit.
Two others managed to jump out of the way and escape injury.
Puckett said two of the victims were critically injured.
One of them was airlifted to Children’s of Alabama and the other was taken by ambulance.
A Helena officer is being treated at a hospital for an injury sustained during the rescue, the mayor said.
Puckett said he doesn’t believe any of the teens are from Hoover.
“All of the teams worked in unison to get the victims off the hills and out of the woods very quickly,’’ he said. Pelham Fire Department provided mutual aid.
