2 South Alabama players, including starting kicker, entering transfer portal

Two South Alabama football players announced plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Friday afternoon.

Kicker Laith Marjan and defensive back/special teamer Brian Dillard announced they will enter the portal, who opens for 20 days beginning on Monday. Both are redshirt juniors with one season of eligibility remaining.

Marjan was a second-team All-Sun Belt Conference pick this season, his first with the Jaguars after transferring from East Carolina. The Raleigh, N.C., native has made 17 of 18 field goals (with a long of 49 yards) and 42 of 44 extra-point attempts through 12 games.

Dillard totaled one tackle in five games for the Jaguars this season after making three stops in 11 games in 2023. The Ocala, Fla., native played at Florida International, West Georgia and Independence (Kan.) Community College before arriving at South Alabama prior to the 2023 season.

Marjan and Dillard make three South Alabama players who have publicly declared intentions to enter the portal during the current cycle. Jordan Scruggs, the Jaguars’ starting Husky (nickel) safety and third-leading tackler this season, announced just after the regular-season finale against Texas State that he was also exploring a transfer.

Players who wish to enter the transfer portal must notify their schools of their intention to do so by Dec. 28. However, there is no deadline for when they must choose a new school.

South Alabama (6-6) plays Western Michigan (6-6) in the IS4S Salute to Veterans Bowl on Dec. 14 in Montgomery. Head coach Major Applewhite said Thursday he would allow players who enter the transfer portal to play in the bowl game, provided they continue to attend meetings and participate in practice in the week leading up to the game.
