Two Mississippi men have been charged in the traffic crash death of a 19-year-old on Interstate 459 in Hoover.

Hoover police on Sunday announced the arrests of Tyrique M. Carter, 22, of Byram, Miss., and Elisha Jamal Lindsey, 22, of Jackson, Miss.

Both men are charged with reckless murder and attempting to elude. Carter is also charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries or death.

The victim has been identified as Tamarion Burton of Jackson, Miss.

Authorities said those involved were traveling together in a group in three vehicles. They were on their way to Mississippi from Atlanta.

The crash happened at 10:09 a.m. Friday on I-459 southbound near U.S. 31.

Witnesses described three vehicles driving at a high rate of speed on the interstate. One of the vehicles, a Nissan Sentra, left the roadway and struck a tree.

Lt. Daniel Lowe said the Nissan is believed to have been struck by one of the other vehicles, causing it to leave the roadway.

Burton was pronounced dead on the scene. Another person inside the car was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Descriptions of all the involved vehicles were provided by 911 callers and was shared with patrol officers in Hoover and neighboring agencies, Lowe said.

A short time later, a Hoover officer spotted the other two vehicles believed to be involved traveling on John Hawkins Parkway near Hunter Street.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicles, but both fled.

One of the vehicles, a Jeep Cherokee, was involved in a single vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 31 and I-459. One person was taken into custody at that location.

The other vehicle, a BMW M4, continued fleeing and was pursued by officers with several area agencies, including Star 1 helicopter.

That vehicle eventually stopped at a gas station on Morgan Road in Helena where another person was taken into custody.

Lowe said the preliminary investigation into the incident indicates that all three vehicles were occupied by individuals who knew each other.

They were each traveling at a very high rate of speed together on I-459 when the BMW M4 and Nissan Sentra collided with one another, sending the Nissan Sentra off the roadway and into a tree.

The BMW and Jeep Cherokee both briefly stopped but fled the scene when police arrived, resulting in the pursuit.

Both suspects are awaiting transfer from the Hoover City Jail to the Jefferson County Jail where they will be held without bond.

Lowe said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected.
