$2 million betting market shows odds stacked against Democrats in 2026 midterm elections

Political takes are a dime a dozen, but a collective $2 million put up by bettors in this market is an ominous sign for Democrats.

According to the legal betting market app Kalshi, nearly $700,000 in bets have been placed by people wagering that Republicans will maintain control of the Senate after the 2026 midterms.

As of Monday, 68% of the $1.9 million in total wagers wagers have been put on the Republicans to win the Senate in 2026.

Just 32% say the Democrats will wrestle control of the upper chamber from the GOP.

As of today’s odds, if a bettor placed a $100 wager on Republicans and the GOP maintained control of the Senate, that $100 would turn into $141 in 2026.

If Democrats want to engage in proper oversight of President Donald Trump through investigations or impeachment proceedings, they will need the Senate.

The silver lining for Democrats is that the GOP’s odds of remaining in control of the Senate have dipped.

Republicans’ odds were 83%, according to the Kalshi market, as of Feb. 21. So the GOP’s odds have slipped by 15 percentage points while the Democrats’ odds have increased by 15 percentage points.

Meanwhile, more bettors are wagering that the House will transfer from GOP to Democratic control after the 2026 midterms.

With nearly $3.3 million bet in that market, 81% of wagers have been placed on Democrats to win the House in 2026, compared to 19% of wagers placed on the GOP to maintain control.
