2 men killed in overnight Birmingham shootings now identified

Authorities have released the names of two men killed less than 12 hours apart overnight in Birmingham.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Darcy Jamere Joseph, 33, of Hueytown, and Frederick Douglas Berry Jr., 41, of Birmingham.

East Precinct officers were dispatched just after 8 p.m. Monday to the 5000 block of 41st Way North on a report of shots heard.

Police entered an alley and found a vehicle that had been struck by gunfire, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald. Officers then discovered Joseph wounded inside the vehicle.

He was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:41 p.m.

The alley where Joseph was found is an area where groups of people hang out. “It’s not uncommon for someone to be in that alleyway,’’ Fitzgerald said.

Police are asking anyone who may have heard or seen anything to come forward.

Berry was shot early Tuesday while riding his bicycle in the 7000 block of First Avenue South.

East Precinct officers were dispatched at 4:16 a.m. after Shot Spotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, indicated multiple rounds fired in that area.

Once on the scene, officers found Berry unresponsive in the road. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported him to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead 4:57 a.m.

Investigators believe the victim was riding his bike when the gunman approached him and opened fire.

“Right now, this incident does not appear to be random,’’ Fitzgerald said.

So far this year, there have been 83 homicides in Birmingham. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been rule justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

As of Aug. 8, 2022, there had been 85 homicides in the city.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 115 homicides, including the 83 in Birmingham. Last year at this time, there had also been 115 homicides.

No arrests have been announced in either overnight slaying.
