Two men were killed when fire swept through a house in downtown Oxford Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were able to rescue an 8-year-old girl who is now hospitalized in Birmingham.
The Oxford Fire Department responded at 1:56 a.m. to a report of a fire at 24 Main Street.
City spokeswoman Lorie Denton said the first firefighters arrived on the scene at 2 a.m., finding heavy firing showing and people trapped inside.
Crews were able to pull the girl from the fire. She was treated on scene by Oxford Health System Paramedics and then taken to Children’s of Alabama. The severity of her injuries was not immediately known.
Firefighters found the two men dead inside. Their identities have not yet been released.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office with assistance from the Oxford Fire Department and the Oxford Police Department.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims that were injured and the families of the deceased,’’ Denton said in a news release.
