2 men killed in early morning barrage of gunfire on Birmingham street as violent week continues

A violent week in Birmingham continued early Sunday morning when two men were gunned down on a southwest Birmingham street.

Shortly after 6 a.m., the city’s West Precinct officers received a Shot Spotter alert in the 3400 block of Boise Avenue, in Birmingham’s Green Acres community. Officers then learned at least two people were down in the road.

The victims were found on the ground, just a short distanced from each other. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said there were multiple shots fired in that area.

“There’s shell casings everywhere on Boise Avenue,’’ he said.

“Our officers were getting reports there was a third victim,’’ he said. “However, we’ve not been able to locate a third victim.”

More than 15 to 20 shots were fired, Fitzgerald said. Several homes were damaged by the gunfire. Some of those homes had young children inside.

Detectives were canvassing the neighborhood to try to determine what happened. Dozens of family members and friends flocked to the location, visibly distraught.

Multiple fights broke out among the crowd that gathered at the scene.

“This is a tight-knit community and word has already traveled fast,’’ Fitzgerald said. “We’re just working to learn what took place that led to these two men losing their lives.”

The double homicide marked the city’s third and fourth homicides in under 24 hours – all leaving men dead in the middle of a Birmingham Street as the result of multiple shots fired.

On Saturday afternoon, a man was shot to death on Fourth Avenue West in the Bush Hills community. Later that night, another man was found fatally shot on Vassar Avenue on the east side.

In all, nine people have been killed in nine days.

“We have lost four of our community members in 24 hours,’’ Fitzgerald said. “The sad fact about these homicide victims is they were shot and killed in the middle of the street, all of them.”

No arrests have been made in any of the weekend homicides.

“Our officers and detectives are going to work as hard as they can to solve each of these,’’ he said.

There have been 28 homicides so far this year in Birmingham. Of those, three have been ruled justifiable.

In all of Jefferson County there have been 35 slayings, including the 28 in Birmingham.
