2 men killed hours apart in separate Birmingham shootings now identified
The names of two men killed just hours apart in Birmingham Friday night have now been released.
Police on Saturday identified the victims as Rahkeem Darnell Vanderbilt, 32, and Diangelo Freeman, 56. Both lived in Birmingham.
Vanderbilt and two other men were shot just before 7 p.m. when someone opened fire on them as they were hanging out together on Fourth Avenue S.W., just off Goldwire Street.
South Precinct officers were dispatched to the area on a report of a person shot. They found blood and multiple shell casings at the scene, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
The three victims had already been taken by private vehicle to UAB Hospital, where Vanderbilt was pronounced dead.

The Friday night killings – the city’s first slayings in nearly two weeks – brings Birmingham’s homicide tally for 2023 to 81. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency, and seven others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 113 homicides, including the 81 in Birmingham.
