2 landscapers killed after being hit by vehicle while cutting weeds on I-85

Two landscapers were killed and a third worker was injured after they were hit by a vehicle that left the highway as they were cutting weeds along I-85 in Chambers County, authorities said.

The workers were part of a crew cutting weeds by the cable wire on I-85 near the 74-mile marker in Valley around 5:30 p.m., WRBL reported.

A vehicle left the highway and struck the workers, the Chambers County Coroner’s Office told the station.

The injured worker was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The severity of the worker’s injuries was not immediately disclosed.

The incident led authorities to shut all northbound lanes of I-85 and drivers were urged to avoid the area.
