2 killed when shots fired at Talladega apartment complex

Two people were killed when gunfire erupted at a large gathering early Sunday in Talladega.

Talladega Coroner Shaddix Murphy identified the victims as Montrelle Dontae Johnson, 22, and Djuante Nyjuwan Dickers, 23. Both men lived in Talladega.

A third person was wounded but survived.

The shooting happened about 3 a.m. at Talladega Downs apartments.

Authorities said a group of roughly 200 people were gathered at the complex when the shots rang out.

Johnson was taken to Citizens Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:06 a.m. Sunday.

Dickerson was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:42 a.m. Sunday.

The investigation is ongoing.
