2 killed in Sunday traffic crashes on Birmingham-area interstates

A man and woman were killed in separate traffic crashes Sunday in Jefferson County.

The first wreck happened at 12:59 a.m. on Interstate 59/20 near the Five Points West Avenue exit in Birmingham.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, 55-year-old Douglas Edward Washington, of Center Point, was stopped his Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck in the northbound lanes because of mechanical failure.

While stopped, Washington’s truck struck from behind by an oncoming Ford Fusion. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 1:21 a.m.

Birmingham police are investigating.

Margaret Martin Greenwood, 57, of Anniston, was killed Sunday afternoon Interstate 20 near Irondale. Authorities said that crash happened at 4:08 p.m. near the Interstate 459 interchange.

Greenwood was driving westbound in her Kia Optima when her car was struck by a tire that came off an eastbound trailer. The impact caused her car to leave the road and hit a utility police.

Greenwood was pronounced dead on the scene at 4:24 p.m.

The wreck is under investigation by Alabama State Troopers.
