2 inmates died over the weekend at Donaldson Correctional Facility in west Jefferson County

Two state prison inmates died over the weekend at William Donaldson Correctional Facility in western Jefferson County.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified one of the men as Tony Edward Evans, 51. The second inmate’s name is being withheld pending notification of his family.

In the first case, the 69-year-old man was found unresponsive at 8:02 a.m. Saturday in his bed in a dormitory. He was pronounced dead at 8:15 a.m.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said the inmate was being treated for multiple medical ailments and his death is believed to be of natural causes. An autopsy showed no signs of trauma or foul play.

The man was serving a life sentence for a 1989 first-degree sodomy conviction out of Calhoun County.

In the second death, Evans was found unresponsive in his private cell at 2:55 a.m. Sunday. He was pronounced dead at 3:07 a.m.

An autopsy showed no signs of foul play or trauma, Yates said. His cause of death is pending further lab studies.

Evans was serving a life sentence for murder, rape, and sexual abuse for a 2005 conviction out of Houston County.
