2 inmates charged with murder in 2022 stabbing death of another inmate at Donaldson prison
Two state inmates have been charged in the 2022 stabbing death of another prisoner at William Donaldson Correctional Facility.
Mitchell R. Cosby, 41, was killed June 15, 2022, at the western Jefferson County prison. The deadly assault happened just before 5:30 p.m. that Wednesday.
Tavaris Dewayne McCartney, 39, and Karl Martin, 30, are charged with murder in Cosby’s slaying.
Charging documents state Cosby was stabbed multiple times in his chest and arms. He was pronounced dead at the prison.
The warrants against McCartney and Martin were actually obtained against the two suspects more than a year ago but were not made public until the inmates were served with those warrants, which happened recently.
Both were booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Dec. 13. McCartney’s charges were made public Friday, and Martin’s were made public Tuesday.
McCartney is serving a 20-year robbery sentence out of Madison County. Martin is serving a 20-year robbery sentence of Mobile County.
Cosby was serving life without parole for a 2002 capital murder conviction in Jefferson County.
Court dates for McCartney and Martin have not yet been made public.
