2 injured, 7,500 gallons of gasoline spilled onto I-59 in predawn Birmingham crash
A predawn crash between an 18-wheeler and an SUV sent two people to the hospital and has shut down part of Interstate 59 northbound in Birmingham.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the wreck at I-59 northbound and the Fourth Avenue exit near Roebuck at 2:41 a.m. Saturday.
Crews arrived on scene and found the tractor-trailer overturned with the driver trapped and an SUV that had collided with the truck.
Both drivers were extricated from the vehicles and taken to UAB hospital for injuries.

The 18-wheeler was carrying about 7,500 gallons of gasoline at the time of the accident. A large amount of gasoline spilled onto the interstate.
Multiple agencies have been on the scene for hours, including BFRS, Weil Wrecker, the Alabama Department of Transportation, the Jefferson County EMA ,and the Department of Transportation.
As of 8 a.m., both lanes of the interstate remained closed.
