2 held on child sex, human trafficking charges stemming from Dothan case
A man and a woman are being held in an Alabama jail without bond after authorities said they committed child sex and human trafficking crimes.
The charges stem from a Dothan Police Department investigation into a child being involved in sexual activity with an adult, the agency said.
The investigation initially led to the arrest Dec. 26 of 31-year-old Dothan resident Raynia Cooper, who was charged with one count of directing a child to engage in sodomy, police said.
As the investigation continued, authorities charged another suspect on Dec. 28. Edwin Medina, 30, also of Dothan, was initially charged with first-degree sodomy.
Additional evidence came to light, police said Wednesday, that led to more charges for both suspects.
Cooper was charged with two more counts of directing a child to engage in sodomy along with four counts of directing a child to engage in sexual contact, one count of human trafficking and one count of enticing a child for immoral purposes.
She is being held without bond in the Houston County Jail.
Medina’s additional charges, also added on Wednesday, were four counts of sodomy, four counts of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old, one count of human trafficking and one count of enticing a child for immoral purposes.
He also has no bond.
Police said further information will not be released “due to the sensitive nature of this case,” although the department said the investigation was ongoing and additional charges are possible.
