2 from Alabama chosen for NBA Rising Stars, but only 1 will play

Two former Alabama standouts have been selected for the Rising Stars at NBA All-Star Weekend showcase of the league’s top young players, but only one of them will get to play.

The NBA announced the player pool for the event on Tuesday, including Crimson Tide alumni Brandon Miller and JD Davison.

In his second campaign with the Charlotte Hornets, Miller will miss the event after sustaining a season-ending wrist injury during a 117-112 victory over the Utah Jazz on Jan. 15.

Davison will play for the NBA G League’s team in the Rising Stars.

The Castrol Rising Stars player pool includes 10 NBA rookies, 11 second-year NBA players and seven NBA G League players. The 21 NBA players, picked by NBA assistant coaches, will be drafted onto three seven-player teams. The seven NBA G League players, chosen by the league office, will form a fourth team.

The Rising Stars draft will occur at 3 p.m. CST Tuesday by currently unnamed honorary team coaches.

The four teams will play a tournament with the first-to-40 winning in the semifinals and the first-to-25 winning the championship game.

The Rising Stars tournament is set for 8 p.m. CST Feb. 4 at Chase Center in San Francisco. TNT will televise the event.

The Rising Stars winner will advance to the NBA All-Star Game tournament at 7 p.m. CST Feb. 16, which will be televised by TNT.

The NBA All-Star Game will follow the tournament format of the Rising Stars for the first time this season. The 24 NBA All-Stars will be drafted for three eight-man teams by TNT’s “Inside the NBA” analysts Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith.

Since joining the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 2022 draft, Davison has played in 25 NBA regular-season games, including five this season.

During that time, Davison has become the career leader in points and assists for the Maine Celtics, Boston’s affiliate team in the NBA G League.

In 29 games for Maine this season, the former Calhoun School standout has averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 7.9 assists and 1.5 steals.
