2 dead after plane crashes in Gulf of Mexico near Florida’s Venice fishing pier
Two men died when a plane went down in the Gulf of Mexico shortly after takeoff from Venice Municipal Airport on Florida’s west coast Wednesday night.
The Venice Police Department said the plane went down about 1/2 mile off the Venice fishing pier about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. The two men were in their 50s or 60s, according to information released by police.
Rescue crews continued to search for other possible victims into Thursday morning, but by late Thursday morning the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had said the two men were the only people on board the flight.
Venice police say they were aided by Florida Fish & Wildlife, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were notified.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Wednesday night’s crash was the second in recent months involving a flight leaving the Venice airport. In December, a small plane went down just after takeoff, killing a family of three.
