2 charged with capital murder in fatal robbery of 57-year-old Birmingham man
Two suspects have been charged in the shooting death of a 57-year-old man inside his north Birmingham home earlier this week.
Tanarence Murphy, 27, and Aaron Elijah Bearden, 24, are charged with capital murder in the slaying of Robert Chandler. Both were taken into custody in Huntsville.
Birmingham police officers were called Chandler’s residence in the 4200 block of Fairmont Way just before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on a report of a person down, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
A community member had gone to check on Chandler and found him unresponsive.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene and pronounced Chandler dead.
An autopsy showed Chandler died from a gunshot wound.
Chandler was among multiple people who were asleep in the house in April 2019 when 58-year-old William “Billy” Morris was fatally shot while he was asleep on the couch.
Chandler and Morris were cousins. The 2019 killing happened during a drive-by shooting, and Chandler talked at length with AL.com about what happened in those early-morning hours.
The charge against Murphy and Bearden is because police say Chandler was killed during a robbery.
Court records show Murphy and Bearden are co-defendants in another robbery case in Birmingham from 2021.
Murphy failed to show for a court hearing and has been wanted since 2022.
Jefferson County prosecutors this week filed a motion requesting Bearden’s bond be revoked from the 2021 case since he is now charged with capital murder.
Both suspects were taken into custody on Tuesday and held in the Birmingham City Jail. They were transferred just after 4 p.m. Thursday to the Jefferson County Jail where they are being held without bond.
