2 Birmingham-area women, teen boy tried to smuggle knives, drugs into Alabama prison, officials say
Two Birmingham-area women and juvenile boy are under arrest after authorities said they tried to smuggle contraband into a central Alabama prison.
Carrie Drake, 43, of Irondale, and Hanna Crowder, 31, of Birmingham, were arrested Tuesday at Staton Correctional Facility in Elmore County, Alabama Department of Corrections officials announced Thursday.
The juvenile male, whose name has not been released, is also facing felony charges.
Prison officials said the three suspects were detained and found to be in possession of a bookbag that contained charging blocks, charging wires, earbuds, knives, cell phones and a bag of assorted drugs.
Crowder is charged with two counts of drug trafficking, promoting prison contraband, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and obstructing justice by giving investigators a false name and social security number.
Drake is charged with two counts of drug trafficking, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and promoting prison contraband.
The juvenile, whose name has not been released, will be charged as an adult with drug trafficking, prohibited activities and possession of a firearm.
All three are being held in the Elmore County Jail. Bond for Crowder and Drake is set at more than $3 million each.
The investigation is ongoing, and more charges could be filed.
