2 arrested in deadly Madison strip mall shooting: More than 200 rounds fired
Vowing to arrest anyone involved in a Saturday night shooting, Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner said two people are in custody on reckless murder charges following an incident that involved hundreds of shots fired at a 21st birthday party.
At a Monday news conference, Turner said to expect more arrests in the case, which was not a “random shooting” but a “stupid act.”
“We do not know the issues that led us to this,” Turner said. “The people we have arrested really don’t want to speak about it. Obviously, the issues led to this type of gunfire playing out.”
The shooting occurred at Legacy Event at a strip mall near Mastin Drive on U.S. 72 around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Turner said 11 people were wounded in the shooting, which left two dead and three people still in critical condition, Turner said.
According to Turner, the shooting involved two different groups and multiple weapons, with investigators collecting more than 200 shell casings. “You literally could not take a step without stepping on one,” he said. Authorities said there is video of the shooting, but investigators would not release the video at present.
Turner said the gunfire played out inside the center, on the sidewalk, the parking lot and on the roadway.
“This is not normal,” Turner said.
