2 Alabama prison inmates died Thursday in Jefferson County

Two state inmates died Thursday in Jefferson County, one at William Donaldson Correctional Facility and the other a work release inmate who died at the hospital.

Authorities have not released the name of the Donaldson inmate but said he was 28 years old.

He was found unresponsive in his cell at the western Jefferson County prison at 6:55 a.m. Thursday and pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said there was no evidence of trauma or foul play.

In the second case, 54-year-old Mashell Brasher Mann was housed at the Birmingham Community Work Release Center on 25th Street North.

She was found unresponsive June 16 and taken to UAB Hospital. She was pronounced dead at 11:18 a.m. Thursday at the hospital.

An autopsy will be performed today to determine her cause of death.

Both deaths are being investigated by the Alabama Department of Corrections Law Enforcement Services Division.

The unidentified Donaldson inmate is the third to die in less than a week at the facility, and the 15th to die this year. In 2022, 40 inmates died at the prison.
