2 Alabama prison employees arrested on drug charges in 2 days
Two Alabama Department of Corrections employees – one a new hire and the other a trainee – were arrested this week on drug charges.
One was arrested during a checkpoint near a north Alabama prison and the other was taken into custody after a search of his Montgomery County home turned up 5 pounds of marijuana.
Shawnia Williams, a 22-year-old Huntsville woman, was arrested Wednesday during a checkpoint at Limestone Correctional Facility in Harvest.
ADOC investigators were conducting the checkpoint outside the prison when two drug-sniffing dogs alerted to the possibility of narcotics on a sedan driven by Williams.
Williams was a newly hired correctional security guard.
A hand search of the vehicle turned up 1.5 grams of marijuana and a digital scale.
Williams was taken to the Limestone County Jail on charges of second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She has since been released on bond.
On Thursday, 19-year-old Larry Wilson of Huntsville, was detained during a traffic stop by Monroe County sheriff’s deputies. He was found with 50 grams of marijuana in his vehicle, ADOC officials said.
He was taken to the Monroe County Jail for first-degree possession of marijuana.
ADOC’s Law Enforcement Services Division narcotics agents began an investigation and determined Wilson had additional marijuana at his Montgomery residence.
ADOC Narcotic agents, K-9 officers, and members of ALEA’s Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit carried out a search warrant at the home.
The search turned up 5 pounds of marijuana and two guns.
The investigation is ongoing.
“The ADOC continues to combat illegal contraband being introduced to the state’s correctional facilities, whether it is introduced from the inside or the outside,” said ADOC Commissioner John Q. Hamm. “There is no place for corrupt personnel at ADOC.”
