2 Alabama HS seniors named to USA Today national defensive team

Thompson’s Peter Woods and Central-Phenix City’s AJ Harris have both been named to the All-USA Today Defensive Football Team.

The 25 members of the team will be honored as nominees for the national defensive player of the year, which will be revealed this summer.

Woods, the No. 1 player on AL.com’s A-List of top seniors in the state, signed with Clemson in December. The defensive lineman led Thompson to four straight Class 7A state titles.

He finished his senior season with 77 tackles, including 21 for a loss, and 9 sacks. He was named Class 7A Lineman of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association and finished second in Mr. Football voting. He also was the Alabama MVP in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic.

Harris, No. 11 on the final A-List, signed with Georgia. The defensive back helped Central-Phenix City to the Class 7A state semifinals. He finished the season with 52 tackles, 7.5 tackles for a loss, a sack and 3 INTs.

Other noteworthy names on the USA Today team include Alabama signees Caleb Downs (Mill Creek, Ga.) and Keon Keeley (Berkeley Prep, Fla.), Ole Miss signee Suntarine Perkins (Raleigh, Miss.) and Colorado commit Cormani McClain (Lake Gibson, Fla).

Keeley is the No. 2 overall recruit in the nation, according to the 247 composite rankings. Downs is No. 6.
