2 Alabama alumni included in Week 15 NFL fines
Three players from Alabama high schools and colleges were among the 14 NFL players fined by the league for transgressions during Week 15 games.
The NFL announced on Saturday the fines for last week’s games, and none of the plays cited by the league for the three state players had resulted in a penalty on the field.
The players with Alabama roots who received fines included:
· Detroit Lions defensive back Brian Branch (Alabama) was fined $8,103 for unnecessary roughness. The NFL cited a pass breakup by Branch in the first quarter of the Lions’ 42-17 victory over the Denver Broncos on Saturday as the reason for the fine.
· Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne (Shades Valley, Alabama) was fined $10,927 for unnecessary roughness. The NFL cited Payne’s actions during a fumble lost by Los Angeles Rams in the second quarter of Washington’s 28-20 loss on Sunday.
· Cleveland Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith (Greenville) was fined $16,391 for a hit on a quarterback. The NFL cited Smith’s hit on Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields on the final play of the first half as the reason for the fine. The play resulted in an interception for the Browns during a 20-17 victory on Sunday.
Branch received his third fine of the season, Smith his second and Payne his first.
