19-year-old dies in apparent ‘medical episode’ at jail after Florence arrest
Florence police say a 19-year-old died early Sunday, hours after he had been arrested.
The man, whose name has not been released, had been arrested for disorderly conduct, Police Chief Ron Tyler said in a statement.
According to the chief, police responded to a call received at 9:50 p.m. Saturday regarding a disorderly person on Court Street. Officers arrested the man, who was transported to the Lauderdale County Detention Center, located less than a mile away.
Tyler said that during booking, officers and jail staff believed the man began having a “medical episode of some type.”
Though an ambulance was called, the man became “physically uncooperative,” and medics were unable to provide care. This was at 10:35 p.m., Tyler said. The man was then taken by police car to North Alabama Medical Center, and arrived at the emergency poom by 11:06 p.m. The man was escorted in by officers, but his “uncooperative behavior” continued.
Medical treatment began, but the man was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m.
“His death was pronounced approximately three-and-a-half hours after our initial contact,” Tyler said. “This was a medical event. Based on my own review, it is my belief that the original, triggering event occurred prior to officers’ initial contact with the subject. Then, while in our custody, the individual’s physical well being began to deteriorate. At that point, medical attention was summoned. No harm occurred to the individual while he was under our control and in our care.”
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is investigating the incident. Tyler said his department will be fully cooperative.
