A Birmingham 19-year-old has been convicted in the 2021 slaying of another teen on Mother’s Day.

A Jefferson County jury found Demontae Austin guilty of murder in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Demonteco Usher. Austin was 17 at the time of the murder.

The shooting happened just before 11:30 p.m. on May 9, 2021, at 6709 Interlaken Avenue.

East Precinct officers responded to a report of a person shot. The city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – also alerted to shots fired in the area.

Usher was found unresponsive and pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

His mother, Arwilda Wallace, said her son had spent the day with her and other family members. He woke up for a nap and walked down the street to buy a Black & Mild.

Wallace said she’s been told a group of people were standing outside. One of them called Usher over to talk about something that happened a few days before – another young man had been shot.

“People told me my son shook everybody’s hand,’’ she said.

That’s when Austin pulled out a gun and fired.

Birmingham police said signed the warrant against the teen suspect on May 14, 2021, but the suspect remained at large. Austin was finally taken into custody two months later by the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Regional Task Force.

Usher was about to graduate from Woodlawn High School, where he was active in the JROTC program and a member of the Color Guard.

Usher would have been the first in his family to graduate high school. “He had been at home all day, very happy and smiling,’’ his mother said. “We had a real nice day….and his life was ended.”

The case was prosecuted by assistant district attorneys Jason Wilson and Amanda Wineman.

Austin will be sentenced on April 3.
