19-year-old charged with murder in broad daylight killing of Birmingham Housing Authority contractor
A 19-year-old has been charged in last month’s broad daylight, targeted killing of a private contractor for the Birmingham Housing Authority.
Derrian Dewayne Vinson is charged with murder in the Sept. 13 shooting death of 33-year-old Chuck Jermaine Wallace.
Vinson was booked into the Jefferson County Jail shortly before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The shooting happened just after noon that Friday in the 3000 block of 32nd Avenue North. That is just inside the main entrance at the Collegeville complex.
North Precinct officers arrived to find Wallace on the sidewalk. He had been shot multiple times.
Residents reported hearing a barrage of gunfire and some said they got down on the floors of their homes.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue began to take Wallace to UAB Hospital, but he died during transport.
Authorities at the time said the gunman approached the victim opened fire, seemingly without provocation.
“From everything we’ve gathered from speaking with witnesses outside, it was unprovoked,’’ Officer Truman Fitzgerald previously said. “He walked up to the victim, shot him and fled the scene.”
“There was no argument. There was no confrontation,’’ Fitzgerald said. “The suspect was on a mission.”
A motive has not been disclosed.
Fitzgerald said the Birmingham Housing Authority’s investment in surveillance cameras was expected to be crucial in the investigation. Also, the police department’s Real Time Crime Center was able to quickly generate leads for the Detective Bureau.
