18-year-old in custody after apartment shooting injures a 5-year-old in Mobile

The Mobile Police Department said that an 18-year-old has been arrested in connection with an apartment shooting Wednesday night that left a 5-year-old with non-fatal injuries.

According to a statement from Police Chief William Jackson, Zion Sashington is in custody and has been charged with assault and discharging a gun into an occupied building.

Jackson said that two individuals began shooting at someone else at Oak Ridge Apartments whereupon the child became caught in the crossfire.

The investigation also discovered that 5 apartment units were struck by gunfire during the shootout.

The child was treated and has already been released from the hospital but Jackson said the ordeal could’ve ended, “much differently.”

“Like you, I’m infuriated a child was hurt for no reason in an act of violence in our city,” Jackson said. “I’m relieved to know he suffered a minor injury, but know this could’ve ended much differently. The victim was treated and released from the hospital Wednesday night.

“I assure you my department won’t stop until all subjects responsible are arrested and held accountable. This remains an active investigation.”

Jackson said the department was still searching for other individuals involved in the shooting and asked for community members to contact the department with any information.
