18-year-old charged in shooting death of man in west Birmingham apartment
A teen has been charged in the shooting of a man inside a west Birmingham apartment last month.
Antonio Deuntra Pendleton, 18, is charged with murder in the slaying of 26-year-old Antoine Deonta Ester, according to court records made public Thursday.
Police at the time of the fatal shooting confirmed a baby was inside the apartment when the shots rang out, and residents of the complex say the baby was newborn and was Ester’schild.
West Precinct officers were dispatched to Forest Hills Village on Tempest Drive about 2:25 p.m. that Thursday on a report of a person shot.
When they entered the residence, they found Ester unresponsive. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced Ester dead on the scene.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said there was a group of people gathered inside the apartment – probably less than 10 people – when an argument between the victim and the suspect erupted.
The suspect, he said, then fired shots at the victim.
Neighbors said the apartment belonged to Ester’s sister.
“We’re very thankful that child was not struck by gunfire,’’ he said at the time. “We’re thankful we didn’t have more injuries.”
A motive in the slaying has not been disclosed.
Pendleton, of Bessemer, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Tuesday, May 30, and remains held without bond.
A preliminary hearing in the case is set for July.
