16-year-old girl killed by gunfire in north Alabama was ‘beautiful angel’
A 16-year-old girl who was shot to death last week in Sheffield is being remembered by friends and family.
DeMylah Delyric Nixon-Johnson was shot and killed July 24 at about 1 a.m. at 1006 S. Nashville Ave. Investigators believe the girl was not the intended target of the shooter.
Police said officers arrived at the scene to find the victim lying in the grass, shot in the back between the shoulder blades.
She had apparently been shot once.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church on Gunwaleford Road in Florence.
Her aunt, Annie Johnson, has created a GoFundMe page to raise money for her funeral expenses.
“She was an innocent and her life was taken entirely too soon,” Johnson wrote on the page. “This senseless act of violence is heartbreaking and devastating for DeMylah’s family.”
On social media, Misty Horrison called Nixon-Johnson a “beautiful angel,” while others remembered her for acts of kindness.
“DeMylah was a very kind, caring friend. She could be feisty, but she was kind at heart,” Peyton Richardson-Woehler wrote in tribute.
Police Chief Ricky Terry said anyone with information is asked to contact Sheffield police at (256) 386-5630.
