16-year-old among 2 killed in overnight Tuscaloosa shootings

A New Year’s Eve shooting in Tuscaloosa left a 16-year-old dead in one of two overnight homicides.

Just before midnight Saturday, Tuscaloosa police responded to Hodo Haven apartments in the 700 block of 33rd Street on a report of gunfire.

Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy said officers arrived to find the teen victim dead. The investigation led to the arrest of another juvenile – under the age of 16 – on a murder charge.

Authorities said there was a large party taking place at Hodo Haven when the shooting happened.

Kennedy said state law prevents him from releasing any additional information about the young suspect. He also declined to release the name of the juvenile victim, citing the family’s privacy.

Saturday’s deadly shooting was the second in December at Hodo Haven. Kennedy said there is no indication the two are related in any way.

Several hours later, just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Tuscaloosa police were dispatched to a shooting at Brookhaven Apartments on James I Harris Jr. Parkway East.

Once on the scene, officers located 26-year-old Deshawn Tanthony Eatmon dead.

Circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been released, but Kennedy said 37-year-old Michael Terrell Charles is charged with murder in Eatmon’s slaying.

Charles is being held on $1 million bond.
