140 layoffs planned at Alabama auto parts plant
An auto parts manufacturer in Pell City is laying off 140 employees in the next few months, the company said in a notice to the state.
WKW North America LLC plans to start the layoffs on Feb. 7, according to the WARN notice filed Friday with the Alabama Department of Commerce.
WKW is a U.S.-based business that’s part of Germany-based WKW.group, which produces steel and plastic components for the auto industry.
The company did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
WKW.group company filed for bankruptcy for many of its German businesses earlier in the fall, impacting about 1,800 employees in Germany, as several of its businesses were unable to pay their debts, per media reports.
The company also operates in Portage, Michigan, per its website.
Mass layoffs are classified as those in which a company that employs at least 100 people lays off 50 or more workers. Federal law requires those large employers to file a public WARN notice with the state 60 days in advance of mass layoffs or plant closures. Those WARN notices are published by the Alabama Department of Commerce.
