13-year-old charged with murder of his cousin, 15, after shooting at Birmingham home

A 13-year-old boy has been charged in the fatal shooting of his cousin inside an east Birmingham home.

The suspect’s name is not being released because of his age. He is charged with murder in the Jan. 14 slaying of 15-year-old Markell Sanders.

Police said Markell’s mother called 911 at 12:16 a.m. that Sunday saying her son had been shot.

When officers arrived at the house in the 4200 block of 39th Avenue North, they found the teen unresponsive inside the residence. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

Few details have been released and efforts to reach Markell’s family for comment have been unsuccessful.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said Birmingham police detectives presented the case to Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office personnel assigned to Family Court. The murder warrant was then issued.

A family member of the suspect turned him in to the custody of the Jefferson County Youth Detention Center.

“One kid’s life is lost and the other one’s life is forever changed, both before the age of 16,’’ Fitzgerald said. “Juvenile violence is an epidemic in our city that needs the community’s full attention.”
