12-year-old boy injured in west Birmingham when father’s argument with another man leads to gunfire
A 12-year-old boy was injured when he was caught in crossfire at a west Birmingham home.
The shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The boy is expected to recover.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said West Precinct officers were dispatched to the 4900 block of Avenue Q in the Central Park neighborhood on a report of a person shot.
They arrived to find the child at a home in the 1600 block of 49th Street Ensley, which is near the scene of the shooting.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service transported the boy to Children’s of Alabama. His injuries are not life-threatening.
Fitzgerald said it wasn’t immediately clear whether the boy was shot or grazed, but he was injured in the upper body.
Investigators said an argument took place between two men – one of them believed to be the 12-year-old’s father. The two men knew each other.

The two men exchanged gunfire. One of the shooters was inside the home and the other was outside, firing into the residence which had multiple people inside.
Shot Spotter registered five rounds fired. There were several shell casings in the street.
“Neither of the shooters were struck by gunfire,’’ Fitzgerald said. “However, a round may have penetrated the house and grazed or shot the 12-year-old.”
“We know all the parties involved,’’ he said. “It’s just a matter of our detectives gathering as many facts as they can and presenting this case to the district attorney’s office to see if anyone will be charged.”
“It will be a matter of who fired the first shot who was the aggressor,’’ Fitzgerald said.
The homeowner remained on the scene and is cooperating with police. The second shooter fled, but Fitzgerald said they know who he is.
“It’s just another situation where two adults have a disagreement, shots are fired and an innocent party is struck by gunfire,’’ he said.
