12-year-old Alabama suspected car thief caught speeding in stolen vehicle, police say
A 12-year-old Alabama theft suspect is facing 18 felony charges after he was caught driving, and speeding in, a stolen vehicle.
Tuscaloosa police say the adolescent is suspected in a rash of vehicle thefts over the past two months.
He was taken into custody Saturday after an officer spotted him driving the stolen vehicle at a high rate of speed on James I. Harrison Jr. Parkway.
Police spokeswoman Stephanie Taylor said the officer stopped the vehicle and found that the 12-year-old was wearing gloves. He also had a screwdriver and other tools in his pockets.
Investigators say the child is responsible for stealing eight vehicles between March 30 and April. He also tried to steal three others between March 20 and April 3.
Vehicle windows were broken, and steering columns were damaged in each incident.
He is also accused of stealing cash, a Chucky doll and a designer purse from a vehicle as well as using stolen credit cards to make more than $1,000 in online purchases.
The boy is charged with:
– Eight counts of first-degree theft (vehicles)
– Three counts of attempted first-degree theft
– Five counts of fraudulent use of a credit or debit card
– One count of unlawful breaking and entering a motor vehicle
– One count of possession of burglar’s tools
