11 deaths reported in listeria outbreak tied to supplement shakes; 38 states report cases
An outbreak tied to listeria infections has been reported in 21 states, including Alabama, with 37 hospitalizations and 11 deaths nationwide.
The Food and Drug Administration announced Friday a recall linked to 4 oz. Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes due to the potential for contamination with listeria, an organism that can cause fatal infections in young children, older people and others were weakened immune symptoms. Both of the products were made by Prairie Farms Dairy in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The frozen shakes were distributed to food service customers, including hospitals and long-term care facilities such as nursing homes.
The recalled products were distributed throughout the U.S. You can see a list of lot codes here.
The outbreak includes cases back to 2018 with 20 cases across 2024 and 2025 and is considered ongoing with cases reported as recently as late January.
Cases have been reported in Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and West Virginia. The FDA did not identify which states had reported deaths.
Symptoms of listeria typically start within two weeks of eating contaminated food but can start as early as the same day or as late as 10 weeks after. People with mild symptoms often experience fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting, and diarrhea. If the more severe form of listeriosis develops, symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
