10-year-old girl, 16-year-old boy killed in separate weekend crashes in Birmingham, Fairfield

Two children were killed in separate weekend crashes in Birmingham and Fairfield.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the young victims as Tia Williams, 10, of Birmingham, and Landon Kinds, 16, of Pleasant Grove.

Tia was a fifth grader at WJ Christian School in Birmingham.

The multi-vehicle crash happened at 1:10 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 59 southbound near Oporto Madrid Boulevard.  Additional details about the crash were not released.

Tia was among at least five people taken to the hospital. She was pronounced dead at 2:06 p.m.

Two adults, and two other children were among those hospitalized. One of the children was critically injured.

A counseling team is at the school today, officials said.

Birmingham police are investigating.

Landon was killed early Sunday in the 6100 block of Valley Road in Fairfield.

The wreck happened at 4:07 a.m. when authorities say Landon struck the rear of a parked 18-wheeler.

The teen was pronounced dead on the scene at 4:42 a.m.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
