10 students affected by ‘unusual smell’ in Huntsville school gym

Huntsville City Schools officials said a smell that sent 10 students and a few staffers to the school nurse at Goldsmith-Shiffman Elementary School was apparently not a gas leak.

In a statement, the system said school administration was made aware of an “unusual smell” in the gym area earlier today. The gymnasium was evacuated as a precaution.

However, according to the school, there was no indication of a gas leak or “other items of concern.” After school activities continued as normal.

Those who sought treatment from the school nurse reported not feeling well. Parents of impacted students were contacted directly by the nurse.

A system spokesperson said disinfecting will occur on campus over the weekend before students return early next week as a precaution.

Friday will be an e-learning day and students will not report to campus.
