10 storylines entering Round 2 of the AHSAA football playoffs

The first round of the AHSAA high school football playoffs was filled with intriguing moments and standout performances and included several noteworthy upsets.

It also included the 599th win in the history of Bibb County football, a 56-6 victory over Montgomery Academy. The Choctaws could become the 40th school in AHSAA history to reach 600 wins if they can beat Jacksonville in the second round.

Oneonta leads the way with 726 all-time victories with T.R. Miller just one win behind. T.R. Miller is still alive in the playoffs, but Oneonta lost its first-round game against Brooks. The Tigers could tie Oneonta with a win at No. 1 Montgomery Catholic on Friday.

Here are 10 storylines as teams move into the second round of the AHSAA high school football playoffs.

Champs still alive

All seven reigning AHSAA champions are still alive after the first week of the playoffs.

Thompson’s quest for a fifth straight Class 7A title continued with a 42-0 win over Florence, while Class 6A champ Saraland continued a dominating season with a 56-14 victory over McAdory.

Also, defending 4A state champ Andalusia defeated Sipsey Valley 43-6, 3A champion St. James beat Opp 41-7, 2A champion Fyffe blanked West End 48-0 and defending 1A state champion Leroy routed Calhoun 40-7.

Week 1 upsets

Six of the 52 No. 1 region seeds were upset in the first round.

Here are the No. 4 seeds who posted upset victories last week on the road:

1A: Winterboro defeated Decatur Heritage 42-37

3A: Flomaton knocked off Walter Wellborn 34-0 in Class 3A

4A: Priceville beat Dora

5A: UMS-Wright beat Central-Clay County 7-0

5A: Boaz upset Southside-Gadsden 10-7

7A: Hoover defeated James Clemens 42-16

No four seeds advanced in in classes 2A and 6A.

Super 7: Class 2A Championship

Paul Benefield continues his climb

Paul Benefield collected win No. 347 in his career in Fyffe’s 48-0 victory over West End.

Benefield passed Vestavia Hills legend Buddy Anderson for third on the AHSAA’s all-time victory list with the win. The Red Devils host Lexington in the second round on Friday.

Benefield trails UMS-Wright’s Terry Curtis (355 wins) and Central-Clay County’s Danny Horn (351 wins) on the all-time list.

Curtis’ UMS team beat Central-Clay County 7-0 last week. The Bulldogs play at Headland this week.

Rematches in Region 3

As has become a yearly tradition, the Class 7A, Region 3 teams – Birmingham area – will have rematches in the second round.

Thompson (9-1) will host Vestavia Hills (9-2), while Hewitt-Trussville (8-3) hosts Hoover (5-6).

The Warriors beat Vestavia 21-3 on Sept. 8. Hewitt beat Hoover 28-7 on Sept. 22.

The two winners will play in the state semifinals the next week.

Central-PC vs. Auburn High

Tigers, Red Devils meet again

Speaking of rematches, Auburn and No. 1 Central-Phenix City will meet again Friday in a Region 2 showdown.

The Red Devils (10-0) beat the Tigers 41-20 on Oct. 20.

It will be the 10th meeting between the two teams in the last five years. They played in the state semifinals in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Gulf Shores vs. B.C. Rain

Home Sweet Home

Class 5A B.C. Rain will host its first playoff game in its new stadium this week.

The Red Raiders (8-3) defeated Valley 34-22 last week and will host Demopolis in the second round.

Four Mobile County Public Schools started play this year in new on-campus stadiums – Vigor, Davidson, LeFlore and B.C. Rain. Rain will be the first of the four to host a home game.

The Red Raiders last hosted a home playoff game in 2014, beating Charles Henderson at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Historic win for the Vikings

Mary G. Montgomery rallied to defeat Dothan 21-13 last week, marking the school’s first playoff win in eight previous tries.

Zach Golson’s team is at home again this week, hosting Enterprise.

MGM is now 11-0. Enterprise is 9-2 following its 63-28 first-round win over Daphne. The Wildcats’ two losses came to Region 2 rivals Central-Phenix City (48-7) and Dothan (21-14).

Looking for revenge

Pike Road rallied to defeat Spanish Fort 22-21 a year ago in the first round of the playoffs, handing the Toros their first opening round loss in the history of the school.

The two teams meet again Friday – again in Montgomery – in the second round of the playoffs.

The Toros (9-2) have won seven straight games, including last week’s 28-0 win over Bessemer City. Pike Road has won nine straight, including a 10-9 first-round win over Homewood.

Matchups of the week?

There are several to highlight, including the Class 3A second-round matchup between Mars Hill and Madison Academy.

Madison Academy was ranked No. 2 in the final Alabama Sports Writers Association poll last week. Mars Hill was No. 4.

The Mustangs are 11-0 and have outscored their competition 587-107. Mars Hill is 10-0 and has outscored the competition 542-154. The Panthers’ only loss came against Lauderdale County (20-14) on Oct. 20. The two teams have never played.

Another possibility is the Class 2A matchup between 10-1 Highland Home and 11-0 B.B. Comer. After making a run to the state title game a year ago, the Tigers have outscored the competition by 400 points this year behind star tailback/linebacker Kamore Harris. Highland Home’s only loss came in the regular-season finale to Reeltown (21-14). The Squadron has outscored the competition 450-79 and boasts Auburn commit Jakaleb Faulk.

3A: Houston Academy (10-1) at Mobile Christian (11-0)

4A: Andalusia (10-1) at Jackson (10-0)

5A: Leeds (9-2) at Ramsay (9-2)

6A: Helena (9-2) at Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (11-0)

6A: Mountain Brook (8-3) at Clay-Chalkville (10-0)

Trojans vs. Dolphins

Last year’s Class 5A runner-up, Charles Henderson, heads to Gulf Shores to play the top-ranked and undefeated Dolphins.

The Trojans (7-3) are led by recent Alabama EDGE commit Zion Grady and wide receiver Jywon Boyd. They beat Marbury 64-20 last week.

Gulf Shores (11-0) is led by N.C. State commit Ronnie Royal, DT Otto Brewer and RB Kolin Wilson. The Dolphins routed Beauregard 48-7 in the first round.
