10 new Tuscaloosa restaurants to try in 2023

The New Year is here, and Tuscaloosa better get ready for good eating.

The city’s restaurant scene continues to grow, so make a checklist of where to go starting this month.

The local tourism bureau, Visit Tuscaloosa, does a fine job highlighting the best T-Town has to offer, including a list of restaurants that opened in 2022-23 you should try this year, including a brand new spot on the Strip.

We combed through their picks of new spots, so take a look at the list below.

BISTRO 17 (2217 University Blvd, Tuscaloosa)

Located in the heart of downtown (close to Session Cocktails), this offers “healthy American comfort food” including a vegetable kabob, stuffed eggs and a house burger, not to mention a gluten-free menu.

Domo

Located along Black Warrior River (near Another Broken Egg), Domo is a local market that focuses on prime beef, seafood, cheese and a curated wine selection. You’ll also find mini-charcuterie boards and sandwiches offered daily.

Forte

FORTE CUTS & COCKTAILS (2321 6th St., Tuscaloosa)

Located in The Alamite hotel downtown, this restaurant (with Chef Jacob Stull) offers “elevated classic French staples and classic cuts on a brasserie meets steakhouse inspired menu.” They also boast “a thoughtful wine list and an excellent bar program,” according to the website.

Jalapenos Tuscaloosa

JALAPEÑOS DOWNTOWN COCINA & TEQUILA BAR (405 23rd Ave., Tuscaloosa)

In a welcome return to downtown Tuscaloosa, this restaurant has Mexican dishes with unique additions, plus margaritas, wines, cocktails and what they call the largest tequila bar in Alabama. The restaurant closed its Temerson Square location years ago, expanding to other spaces in the city and county, but we’re glad to see it back at the center of town.

The Alamite

ROLL CALL (2321 6th Street, Tuscaloosa)

The elevated rooftop experience at The Alamite hotel has awesome views of downtown Tuscaloosa (including a prime look at Bryant-Denny Stadium). They serve cocktails, local and craft beers, artisanal wines, plus a small plate menu from Executive Chef Jacob Stull.

SoCal Cantina

SOCAL CANTINA (2308 University Blvd., Tuscaloosa)

This Cali-Mex restaurant brings their popular margaritas and tacos to Tuscaloosa, with two bars, a wide selection of Southern California-style dishes and specialty margaritas made with fresh ingredients. Located downtown between Cravings and Depalma’s.

Veganish Market

THE VEGANISH MARKET (2128 University Blvd., Suite B, Tuscaloosa)

Owned by a local entrepreneur Yazmyn Rozier, this new market offers many gluten-free, dairy-free and plant-based items. You’ll find plant-based ice cream, smoothies and mock-tails on the menu. “The idea behind Veganish was to not only create a menu that caters to the vegan community but also the vegetarians, pescatarians, flexitarians and those transitioning into a plant-based lifestyle,” the website says.

Celebrating Mardi Gras on an annual basis

MO’BAY BEIGNET COMPANY (401 23rd Ave., Tuscaloosa)

Based in Mobile, this eatery offers ready-made beignets with signature syrups and freshly brewed coffees. With a location in Temerson Square (formerly 4th & 23rd), they transport you down to Lower Alabama (or New Orleans) for must-try, authentic beignets (and just in time for Mardi Gras).

Atomic Cocktail Bar

Also located in Temerson Square, this new bar offers high-end cocktails, beer and wine. Find it directly below Dillard’s Chophouse along Greensboro Avenue.

Strange Brew Coffeehouse

STRANGE BREW COFFEEHOUSE (1101 University Blvd., Tuscaloosa)

Located between Gallettes and Alabama Express on the Strip in Tuscaloosa, this spot has appeared dormant for years, until now. Based in Starkville, Strange Brew is a local & independent coffeehouse that specializes in lattes “made with love & crazy tasty original espresso drinks.” Along with their frappes, smoothies, teas, iced coffees, their signature Strange Brew Hot Chocolate and “the best Caramel Apple Cider in the galaxy,” they bake all of their pastries from scratch. You’ll also find fresh chocolate croissants, muffins, scones and coffee cakes, plus vegan and gluten-free options.
