1-year-old with ‘obvious’ injuries dies at Lee County hospital; mother, friend charged

A 1-year-old died early Tuesday at a Lee County hospital after he was found unresponsive at his home.

The child has been identified as Ezekiel Narville, according Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton.

Dorothy Kay Hight, 32, and Seth Chandler Jake Kendrick, 29, are charged with capital murder in the child’s death.

Opelika police Capt. John Hester said Hight was the boy’s mother and Kendrick has been described as a friend that lived at the home with them.

Police responded at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday the 200 block of 24th Street in Opelika on a report of an unresponsive child. Ezekiel was taken to East Alabama Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 12:29 a.m.

His body has been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy. No additional details have yet been released.

Hester said the child showed obvious physical injury.

“We take all homicides seriously but when it’s a kid, it is worse,’’ Hester said. “Most of us have children, and these cases are harder to work. It takes a toll.”

“They’re truly innocent and we want to do everything to get justice,’’ Hester said.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
