1 teen girl killed, another injured when shots fired during predawn argument in Ensley neighborhood
A teen girl was shot and killed, and another injured, when shots rang out in a western Birmingham neighborhood Wednesday morning.
The city’s West Precinct officers about 2:30 a.m. received multiple Shot Spotter alerts in and around the 3000 block Avenue F in Ensley. When they arrived on the scene, they found the young female unresponsive on a sidewalk in a residential area.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced her dead on the scene.
Officers found another young girl – also believed to be a teen – inside a vehicle a few blocks away. She, too, had been shot but her injuries did not appear to the life threatening.
A young male was also in the vehicle, but he was not wounded.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation indicates the teens were in the 3000 block of Avenue F when some type of argument took place, and someone fired on the trio. It appears the surviving victims got back into their vehicle and drove away before stopping to call police.
Fitzgerald said there were multiple shell casings on the ground. No arrests have been made.
Investigators believe the two female victims may be as young as 17 and could possibly be Birmingham City Schools students, he said.
A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Sunday afternoon, also in Birmingham. He had been enrolled at Jackson-Olin High School.
Just before Spring Break started five days ago, Birmingham police reminded the public of the city’s existing curfew ordinance. Under the curfew, teens 17 and under shouldn’t be out after 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday nights and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. The curfew remains in effect until 6 a.m. each day.
“That was our biggest fear when we launched those curfew posts,’’ Fitzgerald said. “We wanted to get the word out to do our best to prevent what happened this morning.”
The victim is the city’s ninth homicide in nine days, and the 26th so far this year in Birmingham. Of those 26, two homicides have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
