1 seriously wounded by gunfire in Birmingham’s popular Lakeview District

A man was seriously injured in an overnight shooting in Birmingham’s popular Lakeview Entertainment District.

The shooting happened just before 2 a.m. Sunday in the 2800 block of Seventh Avenue South.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the incident appears to have stemmed from an argument between two men over a possible traffic accident.

The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

No arrests have been made.

Sunday morning’s shooting is not the first time gunfire has hit the Lakeview District.

On Oct. 6, 2024, three people sustained non-life-threatening injuries when shots rang out. That shooting happened just before 3:30 a.m. in the 3000 block of Seventh Avenue South.

Ten months earlier – in December 2023 – one man was fatally shot and another injured in the 700 block of 29th Street. The shooting happened just before 3 a.m. that Saturday, Dec. 16.

Off-duty officers working at nearby clubs got on the police radio and notified dispatchers of shots fired. Two people were charged in that shooting.

In May 2023, multiple people were shot in the parking lot of a bar in the 2700 block of Seventh Avenue South. An off-duty Birmingham police officer was working inside Tin Roof when, about 12:45 a.m. that Sunday, when someone ran into the bar and told him there had been a shooting outside.
