1 miner killed, 2 injured in accident at Warrior Met Coal
An accident at a Tuscaloosa County mine left one person dead and two others injured.
The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and Northstar Paramedic Services were dispatched to Warrior Met Coal Inc. Mine No. 4 about 7 a.m. Wednesday on medical call, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Investigator Jessica McDaniel. The location they responded to was 13000 Triple L Road in Tuscaloosa.
Deputies and EMS arrived and found that one of the miners had already been taken by ambulance to DCH Regional Medical Center. Two other injured miners were than also transported to DCH.
One of the miners was later pronounced dead. No details about the accident were released.
As per protocol with any death investigation, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene.
McDaniel said no foul play is suspected VCU will be working alongside Warrior Met Coal Inc. and the Mine Safety and Health Administration to investigate and document the incident.
Warrior Met Coal communications manager Wes Cox said company officials, as required by law, notified federal and state agencies, including MSHA, and are cooperating and working with the agencies.
“At Warrior, we place the highest priority on safety and we are deeply saddened by this tragic loss,’’ Cox said in a statement. “Our immediate focus is to support the affected family, friends, and coworkers of our employee at this difficult time. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all who have been impacted by this loss.”
About 1,100 union members walked off the job back on April 1, 2021 in a strike for better pay and benefits that they say were part of an earlier contract negotiated under Warrior Met’s corporate predecessor.
According to the union, concessions to keep the company afloat back in 2016 were not restored in subsequent contract offers.
About 250 miners returned to work on March 2, after the UMWA made an unconditional return to work offer earlier this year.
