1 man dead, another injured after they exchanged gunfire with each other during argument
One man is dead, and another is hospitalized after police say they shot each other during an argument.
Birmingham police North Precinct officers were dispatched at 11:45 p.m. Thursday to a small apartment building in the 1600 block of 18th Place North.
They arrived to find an adult male in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to UAB Hospital.
While officers were on that scene, East Precinct officers received a call of a person shot at a gas station in the 5100 block of Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
The gunshot victim found there had sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital as well.
The first victim was then pronounced dead at UAB Hospital.
Fitzgerald said investigators believe both men were involved in an argument at the 18th Place North location.
“They exchanged gunfire, and shot each other,’’ he said. “We’re still working to see what the argument was about.”
Fitzgerald said the two men knew each other.
The surviving victim is under police guard and will remain in custody while the investigation continues.
The deadly shooting marks the city’s 58th homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and four others have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 81 homicides including the 58 in Birmingham.
