1 man dead, another critically injured after they shot each during an argument in Fairfield

One man is dead, and another critically injured after authorities said they shot each other overnight in Fairfield.

The shooting happened at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of 66th Street in Fairfield.

Jefferson County sheriff’s Lt. Joni Money said deputies were dispatched to the location on reports of multiple shots fired.

Once on the scene, they found a 46-year-old man who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

About a block away, Money said, deputies found a 41-year-old man inside a wrecked vehicle. He, too, had been shot numerous times and was pronounced dead on the scene.

A female passenger inside the vehicle was not injured.

Money said it appears the 41-year-old went to an apartment building and spoke with the 46-year-old while the female waited outside in the car. An argument ensued and the two men fired multiple shots at each other.

The 41-year-old man got back into his car and attempted to flee the scene but only got about one block where he crashed.

The investigation is ongoing.

The fatal shooting marked the 75th homicide this year countywide. It is the third homicide in Fairfield since Saturday, when a 15-year-old girl was killed. A 17-year-old girl was killed on Monday.
