1 killed when fire rips through east Birmingham home, causing roof collapse
Fire swept through an east Birmingham home Sunday evening, leaving one person dead.
Birmingham firefighters from East Lake and Avondale were dispatched at 6:16 p.m. to a house fire at 6015 Fifth Ave. South.
They arrived to find flames coming from the single-story home, said Battalion Chief Clay Hendon. Part of the roof had already collapsed.
Crews had been told there was possibly someone inside. Hendon said firefighters worked to get the fire under control so they could search the house for the person reported to be trapped.
The search did find one person inside in the part of the house that was heavily involved when firefighters arrived. That victim was dead on the scene.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of family.
Hendon said the cause of the blaze is under investigation.
