1 killed in overnight fire inside bedroom at Birmingham apartment

One person was killed in an early-morning apartment fire in Birmingham.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service was dispatched at 1:30 a.m. Monday to Beacon Crest Lane off Valley Avenue.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke and fire in one apartment unit, said Battalion Chief Clay Hendon.

They were able to rescue one person, who was treated on the scene and released. However, a second person in the apartment did not survive, Hendon said.

Hendon said the blaze was contained to the apartment unit’s bedroom. No other apartments were damaged, and no other injuries were reported.

Authorities have not yet said how the fire started.
