1 killed in exchange of gunfire at east Birmingham home

An exchange of gunfire at an east Birmingham home left one man dead.

The shooting happened at 8:04 p.m. Tuesday in the 7800 block of Third Avenue South.

The victim was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:54 p.m.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said the victim was a 33-year-old Black male. They are withholding his name pending notification of his family.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said detectives are working to confirm what led to the shootout and who fired first.

The shooter has been fully cooperative during the investigation, he said.

The man is Birmingham’s 77th homicide this year. Of those, eight have been ruled justifiable and therefore aren’t deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 100 homicides, including the 77 in Birmingham.

Homicides in Birmingham and countywide were up in the first six months of this year, including a 15 percent increase in Birmingham alone.
